In the fire service, the term bunker gear is used to call our personal protective equipment. “Bunker Boots” seemed appropriate as it expresses my desire to be on the ground, where things actually take place, where you can make a tangible difference.
After bouncing back and forth for roughly 30-something years trying to figure out what I should do with my life, I stumbled across the fire service at the behest of a dear friend. This later turned out to be one of the best decisions I had ever made, and opened the door to a whole new field that constantly excited and challenged me. Two years in the volunteer fire service as a firefighter/EMT, and as a security analyst with a private security firm in Annapolis, MD, I have served the past four years as a Security Coordination Officer for the United Nations, currently deployed in a remote UN outpost in Afghanistan.
So, what does this place talk about? Well, considering all kinds of different blogs talking about all kinds of interesting things, coupled with the fact that I am not that much of a creative, attention-catching, proficient writer, I have decided to dedicate “Bunker Boots” to a somewhat niche and unique perspective as a UN Security Officer. In the hopes that the topics themselves will make up for poor English, the blog will cover all kinds of different things, such as international relations and security, combat medicine/TCCC, emergency management, tactical stuff. GoRuck, life in the field, bacon, handmade Afghan carpets, and of course, the United Nations.
